Amazon's Rings of Power series is set in the second age of Middle Earth. Hundreds of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In the series, we follow the war between the peoples of Middle Earth against the Orcs and the evil forces of Sauron after the defeat of Morgoth.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rings of Power showrunner Patrick McKay said that he and fellow showrunner JD Payne hope to work on Season 2 for "a few more years." Which is no surprise given that their goals for Season 2 are "bigger and better" on "every level... by an order of magnitude." Exactly how the second season will be bigger or better remains to be determined, but it's good to know that this team isn't looking to lower the quality or scale of the show just to get it out into the world faster.

Given that Amazon Studios essentially committed to five seasons of the series from the start, it makes sense that the creative forces behind The Rings of Power would feel comfortable taking their time. When asked about the huge budget for the series, Salke partially justified it by saying that Amazon Studios is "building the infrastructure for five seasons" and that they are effectively "building a small town" to produce this show.

According to THR who visited The Rings of Power while interviewing Payne and McKay, the season 2 set even has its own blacksmith and fireplace for making support weapons. McKay says that "the whole creation of this show has been a huge learning experience for everyone involved". While they've learned a lot from Season 1's production that will likely help things run smoother and potentially faster, they also know that the stakes are still high - even without the threat of cancellation threatening to overload.
